To the north of Riquewihr, the vines run along the southern and south-eastern slopes of the Schoenenbourg hillside at an altitude of between 265 and 380 metres, on a fairly steep slope.

The 53.40 ha site is established on Keuper, marly, dolomitic and gypseous soils, rich in fertilizing elements and which retain water well. They are covered by thin Quaternary layers of siliceous Vosges sandstone and Muschelkalk pebbles, while at the eastern end calcareous Lias marls are exposed.

On the Schoenenbourg, Riesling is king. Muscat and Pinot Gris also do well here.

The Grands Crus Schoenenbourg, excellent wines for ageing, develop powerful and rich aromas. The microclimate of the terroir is particularly suited to the prestigious Vendanges Tardives and Sélections de Grains Nobles.

The property

For more than 200 years, the Loosen family has been at the head of the Weingut Dr Loosen, one of the largest producers of white wines in Germany.

After studying archaeology, Ernst Loosen took over the management of the family estate in 1988, after many experiences in wineries in Austria, Burgundy, Alsace and California.

As one of the 200 producers belonging to the VDP, the prestigious German association of Classified Quality Domains Prädikatswein, the Weingut Dr.Loosen produces, from its 20 hectare vineyard, great German wines expressing with authenticity the typicity of their terroir of origin.

The vineyard

This Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett from the Weingut Dr Loosen is made from a unique terroir in Moselle, which owes its uniqueness to its volcanic soil, whose bright red colour reflects the high iron content of the soil. This exceptional vineyard gives the wines a rich aromatic palette with notes of spices and exotic fruits.

The wine

Classified as a VDP.Grosse Lage, the equivalent of a Grand Cru, this Moselle white wine is a Prädikatswein Kabinett, the most delicate style of Riesling. This classification reflects the high level of quality required in the production of this wine, which is made from the best grapes harvested in emblematic vineyards.

Winemaking and maturation

Fermentation is stopped by cooling, resulting in a reduction in alcohol content and a moderate amount of residual sweetness that provides a subtle and flavourful balance with the natural acidity of the wine.
