Château de Rieussec is a wine estate in the Sauternes region of Gironde in south-west France. Its history dates back to the 18th century.
The estate takes its name from the hill on which it is built, called "Rieussec". The château is located near the village of Fargues, in the Sauternes appellation, famous for its high-quality sweet wines.
In 1790, the estate was bought by the Marheilhac brothers, who already owned Château La Louvière in Pessac-Léognan. They undertook major works to modernise the château and the vineyards.
In the 19th century, the estate passed through the hands of several successive owners. In 1855, at the time of the Bordeaux wine classification, Château de Rieussec was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Sauternes appellation, a prestigious recognition of the quality of its wines.
In 1984, the château was bought by Baron de Rothschild, a member of the famous Rothschild family who also owns Château Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac. Under his leadership, major investments were made in the facilities and vineyards, helping to strengthen the reputation and quality of Rieussec's wines.
Today, Château de Rieussec produces exceptional sweet wines made from botrytised grapes, a fungus that grows on the grapes and gives Sauternes wines their unique character and aromatic complexity. Château de Rieussec remains one of the jewels in the crown of the Sauternes appellation, continuing the tradition of quality and excellence established over two centuries ago.
