History of Clos de L’Oratoire
Clos de l'Oratoire is a famous vineyard in the Saint-Émilion region of Bordeaux, France. Its history goes back several centuries and is closely linked to the history of the Saint-Émilion region and Bordeaux winegrowing in general.
The first traces of Clos de l'Oratoire date back to the Middle Ages, when the Benedictine monks of Saint-Émilion Abbey began cultivating vines in the region. The vineyard was created on a privileged terroir, made up of clay-limestone soils and subsoils rich in iron dross, making it an ideal place for viticulture. In 1926, Clos de l'Oratoire was classified as a Grand Cru Classé, in recognition of the exceptional quality of its wines.
The estate has changed hands several times over the years, but over the years it has gained a reputation for the quality of its wines. In 1970, it was bought by the Mazière family, who undertook significant renovations to modernise the production facilities. In 1991, the estate was acquired by the von Neipperg family, who brought a new vision and a commitment to producing exceptional wines while preserving the traditional character of Saint-Émilion. The von Neipperg family is an aristocratic German family with a long history in Bordeaux viticulture. Stephan Graf von Neipperg is the head of the family and owner of several prestigious wine estates in the Bordeaux region. Stephan Graf von Neipperg inherited his first Bordeaux vineyard, Château Canon-La Gaffelière, in 1983. He subsequently acquired other estates, including Clos de l'Oratoire in 1991.
The von Neipperg family are renowned for their commitment to biodynamic viticulture and the quality of their wines. They have made significant improvements to the vineyards they have acquired and have continued to produce high quality wines, while respecting the traditions of Bordeaux. The wines of the von Neipperg family, including those of Clos de l'Oratoire, are appreciated for their elegance, structure and ability to age.
In this way, the history of Clos de l'Oratoire Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is closely linked to the von Neipperg family, who have invested in preserving and improving this prestigious estate while continuing to produce world-renowned wines.
