Dom Perignon is a prestigious champagne house founded in 1743 by Pierre Pérignon, a Benedictine monk from Hautvillers Abbey, in the Champagne region of France.
Pierre Pérignon was a famous oenologist and worked on the production of sparkling wines. He was one of the first to use thicker glass bottles to hold sparkling wine, which at the time was often bottled in more fragile containers such as leather wineskins. He is also credited with improving the Champagne method, notably by introducing the cork to seal the bottles, and by developing techniques to obtain clearer and lighter wines. However, contrary to popular legend, he did not invent champagne itself. Champagne had been produced in the Champagne region since the Middle Ages, but the production method was rudimentary and the wine was often unstable and unpredictably fizzy.
It was in the 19th century that the house of Dom Perignon began to gain fame and prestige, under the management of Moët & Chandon, who had bought the brand in 1832. Since then, Dom Perignon has become a benchmark for high quality champagne, and is often considered the epitome of luxury and refinement. Today, Dom Perignon produces a range of premium champagnes, with special cuvées such as Dom Perignon Rose, which are appreciated worldwide for their complexity, elegance and finesse.
