Shafer Vineyards is an iconic winery located in the Napa Valley region of California, USA. Its history dates back to the 1970s, when John Shafer, a former advertising businessman in Chicago, decided to change his life and take up winegrowing. John Shafer and his family bought a property in the Stags Leap District in 1972. At the time, Stags Leap District was not as famous as other parts of Napa Valley, but Shafer saw the potential of this land to produce wines of exceptional quality.
The first vines were planted in 1973, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate began producing wine in 1978 with the release of its first vintage, Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 1978. This wine quickly attracted the attention of critics and wine lovers alike for its exceptional quality. Over the years, Shafer Vineyards has continued to build its reputation by producing world-class wines, notably its Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon, which has become one of the Napa Valley's iconic wines. The vineyard has also expanded over time, adding new plots and introducing new grape varieties. The Shafer family has always had a commitment to quality and innovation, and the estate has become a leader in the adoption of sustainable and environmentally-friendly viticultural techniques.
Today, Shafer Vineyards is one of the most respected wineries in the Napa Valley and continues to produce premium wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Stags Leap District. The Shafer family remains heavily involved in the management of the estate, carrying on the legacy and tradition established by John Shafer decades ago.
