In 1875, \u00c9douard created a \"triple sec\" liqueur based on orange peel, characterised by a new distillation process and patented bottle shapes. Cointreau was the first registered trademark for triple sec, in 1885, at the Commercial Court in Angers. The success of the company continued to develop: a shop on the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es, exports to the United States, a new distillery in Saint-Barth\u00e9lemy-d'Anjou in 1969, and a merger with R\u00e9my Martin cognacs in 1989. The Anjou recipe for triple sec invented by \u00c9douard-Jean remains a secret. The peels of bitter and sweet oranges are dried for a long time before being macerated in eau de vie. The triple sec is distilled three times in copper stills. Its alcohol content is 40\u00b0C.
