The history of Ch\u00e2teau Beychevelle dates back to the 16th century. The estate was originally called \"Maison Noble de Beychevelle\" and was owned by the Ducs d'Epernon, a powerful French noble family. Situated on the banks of the Gironde, the ch\u00e2teau enjoys a privileged location in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, in the M\u00e9doc wine-growing region of Bordeaux. The name \"Beychevelle\" originates from a Gascon expression meaning \"sail-lowering\", referring to a tradition whereby ships had to lower their sails in front of the ch\u00e2teau as they passed it on the Gironde estuary.<\/p>\n
Over the centuries, ownership of the ch\u00e2teau changed hands several times. In 1755, the estate was acquired by the Famille-Fran\u00e7ois de Fumel family, who played a major role in the development and renown of the ch\u00e2teau. Under their management, the ch\u00e2teau and its vineyards were extended and improved, and the quality of the wines produced was considerably enhanced. In 1826, the ch\u00e2teau was sold to the Achille-Fould family, who held it until 1868, when it was bought by a consortium of Bordeaux wine merchants led by the Cast\u00e9ja family. The Cast\u00e9ja family still own the ch\u00e2teau today. Over the last few decades, Ch\u00e2teau Beychevelle has invested heavily in modernising its winemaking and ageing facilities, while preserving the traditional methods of Bordeaux wine production. The estate now boasts well-maintained vineyards covering around 90 hectares, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes.<\/p>\n
Today, Ch\u00e2teau Beychevelle is recognised worldwide for the quality of its wines. It is classified as a Fourth Growth in the official 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines.
