Winemakers in the northern Rhône since 1481, the Chave family represents 16 generations of uninterrupted lineage committed to producing some of the world's finest Syrah, Marsanne and Roussanne. Jean Louis joined his father in 1992. It was then that he completely replanted vineyards on the original family estate in St Joseph, which had been abandoned in the early 1900s when phylloxera struck the region. Chave toils tediously in the vineyards, painstakingly rebuilding terraces on the incredibly steep slopes of the Northern Rhône. The difficult terrain demands machine-free farming and all work is organic. The wines are vinified using indigenous yeasts and aged in a mixture of barrels and casks, depending on the wine.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave's wines are among the most sought-after in the region and the Hermitage is one of the best wines in the world. Few wines offer as much pleasure and complexity.
